Ch. 1

The Story

Our mission is to "stand with" and care for each individual, honoring their unique reality. At The New Village School, we are dedicated to creating a nurturing environment where children can grow, learn, and thrive, inspired by the timeless wisdom of Rudolf Steiner while embracing the needs of the present day.

When Meinir Davies and a dozen fourth-grade parents started the New Village School in December 2008, the iPhone was young, and MySpace was larger than Facebook. From the start, we worked as a community of parents to limit media exposure and preserve childhood.

In our eighteenth year of operation, we provide experiential education.

We have created a new extended family: the new village. This is a place in which parents feel safe in the knowledge that everyone feels responsible for everyone’s well-being. Our neighborhoods as we once knew them have changed and our school addresses the need for community. In that way our school is a portable neighborhood and our children are raised in a community of caring individuals.

Grade Levels

The New Village School provides experiential education from preschool through 8th grade.

Preschool and PreK

The Little Village School protects, respects, and values childhood.

Elementary School

We nurture the whole child, body, mind and spirit, through story, reflection, adventure, play, and artistic work that fosters all the senses.

AftercareTeatime, Monday through Thursday from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM, for kindergarten through 4th-grade students

Class sizeWe like to have our classes to be at most 18 students. We have one class per grade.

Signature programCWoW: once a week after their morning lesson, each grade leaves the campus with our CWoW outdoor education teachers

Middle School

Our middle school curriculum is both creative and rigorous.

Ch. 3

A School Day

Our daily and weekly rhythms are designed to balance academic rigor with creative expression. Each day includes dedicated time for core academic subjects, artistic activities, and outdoor play / exploration.

Before the bell

School drop-off is between 8:10 and 8:20AM, and teachers will be stationed in the front to receive the younger students (1st to 2nd).

Classes begin

Our students begin Morning Circle at 8:30am outside the KG gates.

3:30

After school

Teatime afterschool care is available Monday through Thursday until 5:30 PM for kindergarten through 4th-grade students.

Ch. 4

Academics

At the New Village School, all content is taught artistically and in context. By teaching artistically, our educators take into account the challenges of our time, the historical and geographical context in which the children are growing up, and the uniqueness of each individual child. We believe it is vital to guide children in learning how to ask meaningful questions, rather than delivering answers for them to memorize.

Advanced courses

Pre-Algebra begins in 6th Grade. By the end of 8th Grade, each student will have had the chance to work through Algebra 1 and some will have advanced to the themes of Algebra 2.

ii.

World languages

From 1st through 8th grade, every student studies Spanish alongside an introduction to a second foreign language, Punjabi, Japanese, or Russian, chosen in 1st grade. Intentionally, the second language is not another Romance or Germanic language, like Spanish or English.

Ch. 5

The Campus

Along with our campus in Sausalito, we own a 5-acre piece of farmland in Novato. Here, children engage in experiential learning by caring for extensive edible gardens, fruit trees, and farm animals (chickens, goats, and alpacas).

A beautiful olive tree now sits at the center of our school, surrounded by native plantings. The white picket fence has been recessed, opening and enlivening the space. The kindergarten garden now has several children’s sinks and brand-new drip irrigation. The Sunny Room has been transformed into one continuous room, with new floors and an expanded footprint.

Ch. 6

Enrichment

Artistic expression is a core principle of our educational philosophy. Students engage in drawing, painting, sculpting, handwork, and woodwork which are integrated into all areas of the curriculum. These activities help develop fine motor skills, visual perception, and creative thinking. Music is an essential part of life at the New Village School. Students sing and play instruments, experiencing the joy of making music together.

We offer flexible payment options, allowing families to pay annually, quarterly, or monthly.

We deliberately keep tuition lower than other independent schools so that a New Village School education is affordable. In addition, we offer Tuition Adjustments so that no family should hesitate to apply for admission because of the inability to pay full tuition.

As part of their learning experience, 7th-grade students raise funds throughout the year for their international class trip. For other class trips, parents are asked to contribute financially to help support these formative experiences.

Tours

Tours are held on select Friday mornings from 8:30-9:30 AM. To preserve the intimacy of the experience, space is intentionally limited. Morning Circle Tours are for parents and guardians only.

ii.

Age to enroll

Preschool and PreK: a two-year program, starting at 2 years and 9 months by September, or the month they turn 3. Kindergarten: a two-year program, starting at 4 years and 2 months by September.

Application

In order for us to review an application, there is a $75 fee at the end of the application. Once we’ve reviewed an application, we’ll schedule a meeting with the family including the student(s) and two of our teachers. These are usually held after the school day around 3:45pm.
