We are a non-public special education school for students ages 6–22 with autism and other developmental differences, offering individualized academic and behavioral instruction.

Ch. 1

The Story

We empower neurodivergent students and their families to build trust through relationships and to thrive socially, emotionally, and academically.

Our teachers and staff spend quality time with our students to develop strong bonds and collaborative relationships. Our teachers receive specialized hands-on training when they arrive at Oak Hill School and they continue their education through ongoing professional development. Nearly all our teachers have advanced degrees in special education.

Who We Serve

Our students range from non-verbal and emerging verbal students on a broad developmental continuum that also includes students with highly developed verbal skills who may have difficulty succeeding in a typical classroom setting due to neurological challenges consistent with those of autism spectrum disorder.

Is this the right fit?

We are a no restraint school. While we do have students with a designation Other Health Impairment (OHI) we are not able to support medically fragile students. An additional requirement is that students must be able to manage their toileting needs with minimal assistance.

Programs

We have 8 classrooms supporting various levels of ability, from more impacted to high-school diploma track.

Oak Hill Prep

Our Oak Hill Prep program partners with public school districts across the Bay Area and delivers standards-based coursework to diploma candidates.

Transition Track

For some students, our Transition Track means continuing along an academic path; for others, it means building vocational skills to enter the workforce. An Individualized Transition Plan is created for every student aged 16 and older.

Ch. 4

Therapies & Support

Support from our marriage and family therapists plays a role in supporting the emotional development and well-being of our students. Marriage and family therapists work with classroom teachers to help develop proactive behavioral support plans for all students. Our teachers and therapists employ a range of instructional and clinical approaches. Our team includes our vocational coordinator, job coach, and social worker who focuses on transitional support services.

Integrated therapies

Speech-language therapy, occupational therapy and psychotherapy are integrated with our secondary school classroom program. Sensory interventions are available throughout the day for all students in our school.

IEP coordination

We work with families and their home school districts to provide a program that best meets the student's individual needs while working toward placement in the least restrictive environment. Guided by the Individual Education Program (IEP), students can receive individual or group support services.

Ch. 5

Life Skills & Transition

We work closely with school districts to return students to the educational mainstream when appropriate. Our Oak Hill Prep program provides 4 years of supported, strengths-based instruction across 10 public school districts and 6 Bay Area counties. We also teach appropriate use of social media and help students learn the social rules of the technological age.

Diploma or certificate

Students excel in their studies and earn the regular high school diploma.

We include life skills such as making one's bed, grooming and taking the bus.

Vocational and community

We partner with over 15 local businesses and agencies to provide students with meaningful, community-based internship experiences. Interns work 1–2 days per week with support from dedicated job coaches who offer on-site training and guidance.

Ch. 6

The Campus

Our campus is adjacent to undeveloped open space. This makes for ideal hiking and nature exploration.

We are located in a peaceful and natural setting in the hills of Marin County.

Our students have access to the outdoor pool (weather permitting), shared-use athletic fields, and a gymnasium.

Our students also have ready access to outdoor play structures, a sensory gym, computer equipment, pianos and other musical instruments, and two kitchens.

Enrichment

As part of preparing students for adulthood, we support them in discovering meaningful and enjoyable ways to spend their free time.

Ch. 8

Families

Family Team Meetings precede each IEP and meetings about the program are scheduled regularly. Each classroom at our school has a volunteer Room Parent.

Parent support

We understand that transitioning out of school can bring both excitement and uncertainty. To support families during this important time, we’ve established a dedicated Transition Support Team, including a Social Worker and Psychotherapist.

School community

OHS Parent Organization has the primary goal of bringing our growing community together. This parent group creates opportunities to support each other, share information, appreciate staff and teachers and support fundraising.

Ch. 9

Funding & Tuition

We are a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization. Advocacy for public funding is the responsibility of the family. The majority of students are funded through their school districts, with support of Non-Public School (NPS) funding through the Individualized Education Program (IEP) either already in place, or in process.

District placement

Our school district partners can refer a student based on the individualized education program (IEP).

Transportation

Students who come from a school district can have transportation provided as part of their IEP.

Admissions

We review candidates for admission year round.

We ask that the first visit to Oak Hill School is parent(s) only or parent and school district official.

Our admissions process includes conversations, information sharing, student observation and data collection conducted by a team of Oak Hill School faculty in coordination with the student’s parents and school district.
