Individualized by Design

We are a private day school in San Rafael for students in grades 3–12 with learning differences, with five one-to-one Focus Program sessions each week.

Ch. 1

The Story

Our mission is to facilitate the independence and meaningful participation of students with specific learning disorders through a Continuous Feedback System that develops skill acquisition and the Qualities of a Sustainable and Independent Learner.

Located in the San Francisco Bay Area, we first opened our doors in 2020.

Who We Serve

At Winston Prep, we view each student as a unique individual learner who has potential and is Able to Learn.

Is this the right fit?

We accept students with average to superior intellectual potential; however, we do not accept students with primary behavioral or emotional symptoms. Applicants are expected to have a diagnosed learning disability and a cognitive and academic profile that matches that of our current students.

Ch. 3

Programs

We group students by learning profile, so our teachers can build each small group class around the needs of every student in it. We continually refine each student's program based on individual progress, while building a powerful sense of community.

Focus Program

Our Focus teachers develop an in-depth understanding of each student's learning profile and apply the right methods and materials to each goal.

Summer Program

Our summer program for grades 4 to 12 welcomes current students and students from other schools, in small classes grouped by skill level.

Ch. 4

Therapies & Support

As part of our learning program, every child benefits from the Focus Program. This program provides daily, one-to-one remedial instruction for each student targeting individual goals in the areas of greatest need. Our Focus teacher is a learning specialist who has no more than seven students on their caseload and serves as each child’s case manager and remediation specialist.

Ch. 5

Life Skills & Transition

We provide support for students wishing to transition to a post-secondary setting. Prior to graduation, we work together with each family to identify different options that may be the appropriate next step for their child's future. In the winter of junior year, each family is invited to participate in an individualized transition meeting with the College Placement & Transition Coordinator, the student’s Focus teacher, and their Dean.

Life skills

Our unique model of education provides intense skill remediation while encouraging students to build independence, resilience, responsibility, self-awareness, and self-advocacy.

Ch. 6

Families

Our Focus teachers are the first line of communication between families and schools; they provide weekly updates to families, including important observations and current activities and progress within Focus sessions, and in content classes. Family input and observations are welcomed and an important component of feedback necessary to understand a student’s needs and progress.

Parent support

We host expert-led Coffee & Conversation sessions for families. Our session before the end of the school year covered the skills and supports that can help neurodivergent children confidently navigate the transition into adulthood.

Ch. 7

Funding & Tuition

Please contact our admissions office for current tuition. Financial aid is available, and we assess each family's application for aid.

Financial aid

Families who are accepted are sent a contract and financial aid forms, and are encouraged to return the signed contract with a deposit within two weeks of notification.

Families can make a gift to Winston Prep, and parents who would like to help with events and activities during the year can contact our development office.

Admissions

We aim to make the Winston Prep admissions process simple, stress-free, and intuitive.

Tours

Attendance at an Open House is required for prospective parents or guardians and is limited to adults only. Upcoming open houses: October 29, 2026 (in person, 6:00 to 7:15 p.m.), November 10, 2026 (online, 6:00 to 6:45 p.m.) and December 3, 2026 (in person).

Application

At Winston Prep, we utilize a rolling admissions process throughout the school year. Applications are reviewed by the Director of Admissions.
